North American retail standard: UPC-A Decoded
UPC-A (Universal Product Code) is the benchmark product identifier launched across North America in 1974. Formatted as flat 12-digit strings, its structured zones allow POS scanners to fetch precise pricing layers:
- Industry Category (First Digit): Labels standard product types (such as coupon sequences, drug codes, or general grocery).
- Manufacturer Code (Next 5 Digits): Assigned explicitly by GS1 US to identify the parent brand.
- Item Identifier (Next 5 Digits): Allocated by the brand owners to label precise sizes, shapes, or flavors.
- Checksum Validation (Final Digit): Mathematical validation calculated from the preceding 11 digits.
